How We Work

Judgment applied inward, as much as outward.

These principles govern where our authority gets exercised — over a client's own excitement, over a vendor dispute a client wants to escalate, and over our own certainty in a conflict. They are the standard we hold ourselves to before we hold anyone else to anything.

01

Mission Discipline

Judgment applied inward.

When design evolution drifts toward what's exciting rather than what was promised, we redirect to the mission — even when the client is the one drifting. Finish selections, office counts, the visible and tactile parts of a project pull focus because they're fun to decide. Our job isn't to say no to enthusiasm — it's to keep asking the question everyone else in the room has stopped asking: does this serve the mission we agreed on, or does it just feel good to decide?

02

Expectation Discipline

Understanding What's Spec'd

Exposed concrete cracks. Natural stone and brick vary. That's not a defect — it's the material behaving exactly as specified. If a client is ever surprised by that at installation, the failure is ours, not the vendor's: we didn't make sure they understood what they were buying while there was still time to choose differently. Our standard is samples, mock-ups, and a plain walkthrough before anything goes in the wall — so nothing installed correctly is ever a surprise.

03

Direct Resolution

The conversation goes to the person, not around them.

Conflict with a design team, GC, or vendor goes to them first — directly, not around them to the owner, and never left to fester. We hold open the real possibility that we're the one who's wrong. Every resolution gets tested against the same standard we test everything against: Understand, Judge, Steward, Partner, Deliver Confidence — not against who's more senior or more certain in the room.

What We Will Never Become

The lines, written down.

Some of these are things we've watched other advisors do to clients who deserved better. Others are the discipline required to make sure growth never quietly erodes the standard.

  1. We will never let our fee depend on a decision being wrong for the client.
  2. We will never default to the process that's easiest for us over the process that's right for the project.
  3. We will never tell an owner what they want to hear when what they need is the harder version of the truth.
  4. We will never route a conflict through the owner that should have gone to the party we disagree with.
  5. We will never carry a scope forward because stopping is inconvenient for us.

There is a right approach.
